What is the Big Deal About Chicken Strips on Motorcycle Tires?

Chicken strips are the outer portions of your motorcycle tire that are unused. They are called “chicken strips because it implies that the rider is simply too “chicken” or scared to lean the bike that far. The person who used the tire must have spent most of his riding time in an upright position. Thus, he seldom if ever learned sharply.
How Do You Get Chicken Strips?
A brave biker is believed to lean the bike over when he turns. This means that it is supposed to touch the road. However, if it does not, then you get chicken strips. However, it is not always that chicken strips result from a bike not getting leaned over. In fact, you can see chicken strips with tires that have just been changed. It is necessary to take it easy on new rubber on your first 50 miles. Otherwise, you will get chicken strips. After all, if you break in new tires properly, you don’t consider it a chicken move.

Should I Be Worried About Chicken Strips?
No. Forget about the pressure. The last thing you would want to think about when you are trying to determine your lean angle when making a turn is how much rubber you’ll expend in order to get rid of your chicken strips. Judging a motorcycle rider by his chicken strips will not amount to anything. Besides, an experienced rider’s bike that does not have any chicken strips is not worth anything at salvage auctions.

How Do You Get Rid of Your Chicken Strips If They Bother You
First of all, do not be like those crazy people who use belt sanders on their tires in order to get rid of the glossy chicken strips. Lots of fast riders who are experienced have tires that are fully feathered in their edges. Riding in the sand can also do the trick if you get a chance to get your bike off-road. You can also take a track-based class.

Should You Be Impressed If a Bike Has Many or No-Chicken Strips?
With a MotoAmerica Superbike, you get to use the total surface for the rear race tire. Thus, you do not expect chicken strips in those places. However, even an amateur rider can do the same. This means that having no chicken strips does not mean you are an expert in riding motorcycles. In the same way, chicken strips on any bike are none of your business except if it is your own bike. Ride your own way.

Some Final Words
The term “chicken strips” is certainly used with self-deprecation. However, this is based on the idea that if you are not wearing your motorcycle tires all the way to its edge, then you are not leaning enough. The thing though is that no one can call you a “chicken” just because you have not tried something you are not yet good at.

It's good to know that breaking in new tires the correct way is not a chicken move. I got my first motorcycle last week but the tires are a little flat. Getting some new ones would help me feel like this investment wasn't a waste.
