Motorcycle Checkpoints: How to Handle Them in the US

​Motorcycle checkpoints are not fun. Cars can pass through any checkpoint without stopping but with MOC’s (Motorcycle Only Checkpoints), you are obliged to stop, get down from your vehicle and submit yourself to inspection. These checkpoints vary from state to state but here are some things to consider before riding out.

Avoid Checkpoints Entirely
One thing riders should not forget before going out  is knowing the road condition ahead. This includes the weather, traffic, and checkpoint positions. Some apps provide real-time events and markers on maps whenever you’re traveling. 

Most riders consult their map apps on their phone to check where are those checkpoints and find another route to avoid them. This is perfect, especially when you are not familiar with the place you’ll be riding out to. You can also consult your riding groups (if you have one) on possible areas where MOC’s are set up. 

If it’s not your first time to be held up in a MOC, better remember those places and find other routes. Most likely, those places have already been staked out by your local police due to the heavy motorcycle traffic or being an accident-prone area.

Travel Prepared
Have your proper documents ready, always. This includes your driver’s license and registration of your vehicle. Make sure to have your rear lights checked and your license plate well fitted to your bike. If you can also afford, try to buy a body or a helmet cam. These things are useful and can be used as proof if anything goes awry.

Know Your Rights

1. Slow down and stop when hailed upon by local law enforcement. Do not rev up and make the chase. They have the right to stop you at a checkpoint.
2. Make sure you have your cameras working.
3. Answer and provide only what is asked. You will be asked for your papers. Provide the papers that is being asked.
4. Ask the reason why you got hailed down. Usually, you get checked by random or if you committed a traffic violation.
5. Relax and do not get agitated. Be nice and accommodating in this scenario but remind them of your rights if you feel it’s going to be violated. This usually ends uneventful and carry on with your ride.
