Almost every state in the US requires owners of cars to have auto insurance. Most states require a minimum value for the auto insurance policy. Thus, there are some states where they would impound your car if you do not carry auto insurance. Minimum coverage is important especially when you exceed your coverage limits. This is the reason why people usually opt for policies that cover more than the minimum required by state laws. A good rule of thumb is always to make sure that your auto insurance policy coverage equals the total value of your house, car, savings and other assets. Check Laws and Decide on Coverage
Check out what laws in your state say about the minimum insurance requirements. It is possible that the minimum coverage may not be the same as what you actually need. When deciding on your coverage, just make sure that it is equal in amount to all your assets’ total value. You are already covered if you already have health and disability insurance from your employer. However, you just need to buy the minimum required by your state. Choose the Highest Deductible But One You Can Afford You need to go for the highest deductible that you can possibly afford. This is because the higher the deductible, the lower your monthly premiums will be. Besides, you are not seeking coverage for every possible wrong on your car but only for major damages. Besides, it is better to spend a one-time $500 from your own pocket to deal with car repairs than to pay a $50-monthly premium whether or not you will need such repairs. This is also useful where state laws require policies that pay out no matter whose fault the accident was. Choose a Good Collision Coverage It is worth having collision coverage if you want a replacement or repair of your car after the accident. Such policies would require a deductible that you have to pay from your own pocket while they only provide coverage based on your car’s current value. The coverage is not based on what you paid for the car when you bought it. Collision coverage that has a high deductible is good because it keeps your premiums low. Know What to Include and Exclude Ask your insurer about all possible discounts that are available to you. You can get some discounts, for example, if your car operates on anti-lock brakes. The best thing to do is to list all possible discounts for which you may be able to qualify. You can also exclude towing insurance while it is better to join an auto club for added roadside assistance. Also, try considering glass insurance or make sure that your comprehensive coverage includes it. Some Final Words The next best people to talk about auto insurance with are your family and friends. As long as you are talking to someone with a similar car model as yours, then you can ask for valuable advice. Moreover, it will give you more confidence. The next best thing is to ask fellow members of an auto club. Just make sure that, with your auto insurance, you do not settle for mediocre service and policies. I like how you mentioned that it is a good idea to ask about discounts when you are purchasing car insurance. I would imagine that you could get a discount on car insurance if you don't have a bad history. If you have never received a speeding ticket or been in an accident, you might not have to pay as much on your insurance.
