5 Tips for Childproofing Your Home

1. Double Check Smoke Detectors

Carbon monoxide and smoke detectors are crucial and should be installed at every floor, including the basement. Choose battery and electrical powered detectors. This will ensure that even if either the power or battery fails, it will still work. These detectors should be checked regularly and batteries replaced every month.
   
   
2. Clear the Air
   You want to make sure that the air quality in your home is safe. Allergens and dust can affect a child's health, especially if they already have allergies or asthma. Have your HVAC system regularly maintained to ensure good air quality.
   
   
3. Secure Every Window
   Windows can pose dangers to curious children who are starting to explore. Place metal guards on windows or replace windows with models that have an opening at the top. It's also a good idea to keep furniture that can be climbed on away from these openings. 4. Be on the Look-Out for Unstable Furniture
   We don't usually pay much attention to large furniture pieces like armoires or bookcases since their bulk makes them relatively stable. However, crawling babies and curious climbing toddlers changes things. Falling furniture can result in concussions or fractures. Secure these massive pieces to the wall with brackets. Flat screen TVs are top heavy so you should anchor it with straps if it's not wall mounted.
   
   
5. Watch Out for the Lids
   Some lids are heavy and can bruise or even break tiny fingers when they fall on them. Make sure lids of toy trunks, blanket boxes, and garbage cans are latched securely with equipment that kids can't break. You should also check lids with a slowing mechanism so they won't slam down on unwary little fingers.
